Acne

What causes acne?

Acne is an inflammatory skin condition that’s often the result of a combination of factors, including:

  • Rising hormones during adolescence lead to overactivity in the sebaceous (oil) glands in your skin
  • Pores and follicles become blocked with oil and dead skin cells
  • Bacteria gets trapped within clogged pores

When your pores become inflamed and clogged with excess oil and debris, a pimple, blackhead, or whitehead forms. In severe cases, you can get acne cysts or nodules. Acne most commonly appears on your face, chest, back, and upper arms.

How does a dermatologist treat acne?

Dr. Walls takes an individualized, holistic approach to treating your acne. She closely examines your skin and talks to you about some of the underlying causes of acne. Typically, Dr. Walls recommends blue light therapy to reduce acne-causing bacteria on your skin.

Blue light therapy also shrinks your sebaceous glands so they produce less oil. In severe cases, Dr. Walls may recommend blue light therapy combined with a special type of acid that clears acne more aggressively. Other treatments may include:

  • Cortisone injections
  • Topical acne treatments
  • Prescription medications
  • Supplements
  • Laser therapies

In addition to treating acne symptoms, Dr. Walls also recommends treatments to minimize acne scarring.

What is blue light therapy?

Blue light therapy is an FDA-approved, noninvasive treatment for acne that uses the blue wavelength range of light to kill the bacteria that causes acne. There’s no downtime, and many people experience a significant improvement in their skin after several blue light therapy sessions. Dr. Walls often recommends blue light therapy to treat existing pimples as well as to help prevent future breakouts.

How do I prevent acne?

While you may not be able to prevent acne altogether, there are steps you can take to reduce symptoms and keep pimples under control. Dr. Walls recommends specific ways to treat your specific type of acne, but some general methods include:

  • Wash your skin after sweating
  • Use a gentle, nonabrasive cleanser so as not to irritate sensitive skin
  • Avoid scrubbing, rubbing, or picking at pimples
  • Avoid touching your face throughout the day, as this can trigger an acne flare-up
  • Use skin care products with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide
  • Protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays

You don’t have to accept acne as a normal part of life, especially if it causes you emotional distress. To explore effective acne treatments in a warm, compassionate environment, call the office to schedule an appointment or use the online booking system, today.
